Kindergarten May Newsletter

Room 6 & 8

Dear Parents:

Finally looks like spring has sprung!! Hopefully the nice warm weather we are having will stay!

Our Kindergarten students are really excited to be hatching chick eggs this month! The fertilized eggs went into the incubator on Monday, April 27th and the approximate hatch date is Monday, May 18th. The children will be involved in the whole hatching process from the beginning to end and in the caring for after the hatch. We will keep you updated as to when our new baby chicks arrive as you may want to come in and take a peek.

The students have completed the learning of all the letter names and letter sounds. All alphabet concepts will be reviewed throughout the remainder of the school year. We will continue with our guided reading and Razz Kids. Such exposure helps children to build a strong foundation that prepares them to learn to read.  Encourage your child to discuss the story with you; to retell events in order, to state the main idea, to make predictions, to talk about the setting, characters….are a few home suggestions to help guide you.

In math we will continue to explore geometry and measurement. Your child will be learning about 2D and 3D shapes and measurement concepts such as length, capacity, and mass.

To further enrich and support the Kindergarten children’s reading, we have started a home reading program the “I Love To Read” bags. It is a good idea to keep the reading sessions short (10 minutes), fun and positive. Then your child will associate book time as positive and fun time, as opposed to, it feeling like a chore or homework period. Please return the “ I Love To Read “ bags each K-Day, as we switch with  each other in the morning. Learning to read is an extra, not an expectation for Kindergarten, so what they absorb from the reading experience is all good. This is a wonderful activity that excites and motivates.

Mother’s Day is on Sunday, May 10 th and we have a small gift that will be sent home on Thursday, May 7th (KA KB) and Friday, May 8th (KC). Just a heads up!

We will be having a Kindergarten Graduation once again this year.  The date for Kindergarten Graduation will be on Friday, June 12th, 2015 at 1:30 pm. The graduation will be held in the school gym and will be around 20 minutes in length. More details to follow in the June Newsletter.

Enjoy the warmth and have an excellent month!!!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Kulcsar

Ms. Sykes
