March 2015 Newsletter

Our classroom themes
and focuses for this month will be St. Patrick’s Day and Easter.
The students have
completed the studying of all alphabet letters. Review of letter recognition
and letter sounds will be continued and expected as a final Kindergarten
learning outcome. In Language Arts we will be starting formal “Guided Reading”
and “Writing” station time teaching in our classrooms. The students are really
excited about learning to read and to write.
On Thursday, March 5th
(KA&KB) and Friday, March 6th (KC) this week we will be
having a Show and Share Day. So please send an item (toy, photo, news to
share…) with your child to speak about. We are working on their formal speaking
outcome (eye contact, volume, interesting, makes sense). At home you might want to go over 3 to 5
things they could say about their sharing.
In the math area, the
students will be covering the unit: Shape and Space. They will be practicing
rote counting to 70, counting backwards and forwards from different starting
points (1-10) and practicing number printing 1-10.
We will begin with an
author study of “Norman Bridwell”. He writes the many “Clifford” titles.
Clifford is a loveable big dog who goes on many adventures. The limited print,
colorful full-page illustrations, identifiable story lines, and common characters
all contribute to the children’s attraction to the books. As a class we will be
practising making predictions, sequencing events, noticing detail and discussing
vocabulary.
