Kindergarten—Room 6
October Newsletter 2012
Dear
Parents:
Kindergarten
has completed their first month of school and what an exciting and busy
learning time this has been for them.
This
past month the kindergartens have spent a great deal of time adjusting to
classroom routines and to school rules.
A special thank you parents for reminding your child to unpack library
books and any teacher mail by their name cards in the mornings.
Our
October themes will be Thanksgiving, Leaves, Pumpkins and Halloween. All
curricular areas of study will be incorporated into activities related to the
above themes.
This
month the students will continue to practice printing their names using correct
letter size and formation. They will be studying the letters Mm, Xx, and Aa.
Stories, songs and motions will be used to help children learn the letters and
their sounds. Along with these letters the words mom, ox, map and ax will be
introduced and practiced. In math, the students will continue with the unit on
Exploring Numbers 1-5. They are just
moving into counting and creating sets for numbers 3, 4 and 5. Related vocabulary such as more, fewer, as
many as, same number as, sets and 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 have been introduced and
will continually be reinforced throughout the math program. Counting orally to
20 and recognizing amounts at a glance to 5 will also be a focus. Additionally,
the concept and symbols for fall, types of leaf names, the Halloween celebration
and Halloween safety will be discussed.
Parents
you may want to help your child practice saying his/her whole name (first,
middle, and last) and to sing the alphabet song. Even though we will be
practicing at school, these two concepts are good to reinforce at home. Additionally,
I have attached Homework Calendar #1 for anyone who would like to reinforce
school learning in the home. The
calendar can serve as a guide to help share what your child has learned, to
help promote communication between parent and child, to model the importance of
education in your home and to help with future homework routines. The calendar commitment is totally optional,
however, if your child completes it, please sign and return for a ‘warm fuzzy’
(reward). Homework calendars are not due at the end of each month but rather
when these letters or concepts have been covered at school. For example, the
first homework calendar will not due until sometime in November.
Points
to Review:
1. Please make sure your child has warm enough outdoor wear
to accommodate recess times now that the weather is getting cooler.
2. Please return library books on Day 3, so your child
may choose new books when they visit the school library.
3. To inform the bus driver if your child will not be
riding the bus.
4. Call the secretary or leave a message if your child
will not be attending school.
Also, here
is a list of the students’ first names from both Kindergarten classrooms. We
had discussed this at Orientation Day and I know some of you have been trying
to plan upcoming birthday parties. Hope this helps!

Special
Note: We
will be having our Classroom Picture taken on Picture Retake Day (Monday,
October 29th). I really wanted to be in the class picture and was
unable to be there on picture day due to an unexpected two week medical leave.
Sorry for any inconvenience!
It has
been a great month and I have really enjoyed getting to know the children. If
you have any questions or just want to touch base about your child, please feel
free to stop in at the classroom after school.
Please remember to check out our blog at http://mrskulcsar.blogspot.com/
for game links and for newsletter and calendar copies.
Hope to
see you out at Family Fun Night and/or at the Halloween Parade.
Have an
awesome month!!!
