Dear Parents:

Kindergarten has finally started and the children seem very excited to be part of our P.J. Gillen school family. We welcome all the new Kindergarten bears and make it our business to take very good care of all those who enter our den.

Our Kindergarten theme for September is Bears. This month the students will enjoy the many bear related activities of singing bear songs, listening to bear stories, doing bear crafts, watching bear learning videos, and dramatizing the story of Goldilocks and The Three Bears.

Throughout this month the students will be learning many school rules and routines. As well, the students will be practicing printing their first names using a capital letter to start and small letters to follow. They will also be reciting the alphabet, recognizing and naming the basic colors, studying the letters of Pp, Oo, Uu (recognition, sound, and formation).  In math, they will be counting orally to 10, recognizing amounts at a glance to 5 and exploring numbers 1-3 (see attached handouts). As part of the health program, bus, school and playground safety will also be discussed and reviewed. Parents are welcome to reinforce any of these skills at home.

Ms. Steffenson, our school counsellor, will be visiting our classroom to talk to the students about certain social skills that will be important to know when they are interacting within large and small group settings. This month Ms. Steffenson will be introducing the social skills of: Following Directions, Listening and Asking to Talk. This is an excellent program for the students to have the opportunity to partake in and the information they learn is used school wide and, more importantly, in everyday life.

Points To Note:

  1. Please remind your child to put any notes, forms, library books or money on the table where they sit. We want the students to establish this routine of unpacking their book bag contents needed for the day (with the exception of their lunch kit) right on the table by their name card. Then they will be ready for morning routines.
  2. To inform your bus driver if your child will NOT be on the bus.
  3. Library is scheduled for each Day 1. Please help your child return his/her        books on time, so they can take out new books each library session.
  4. Pizza by the slice will be sold in the canteen on Wednesdays.
  5. To send one or two small healthy snack items for our morning snack time. Please review this at home with your child.
  6. Pizza is sold in the canteen, by the slice, on Wednesdays for $2.50.

Also, I would like to let you know that our classroom has a blog site. Here you will find a copy of our classroom newsletter, classroom calendar, links to Kindergarten games that reinforce curriculum areas and a place where I can add quick updates and reminders for parents. Please check out our blog site from time to time and put it under your favourites. The address for our blog site is: http://mrskulcsar.blogspot.com/

I’ve enjoyed meeting you and your Kindergarten bears and I look forward to a super year!

Please take care and have an excellent month!!

Bearing you in mind,

Mrs. Kulcsar
