March 2014 Newsletter
The students have
really been enjoying watching our classroom igloo grow. We are just about done,
so please keep sending milk jugs until your child lets you know that the igloo
is complete. Hopefully, we will be done building before the end of this month!
Our classroom themes
and focuses for this month will be St. Patrick’s Day and Rabbits.
The students will be
studying the alphabet letters: Ee, Ii, Ww and Qq. Again these letters will be
combined with previous ones to help students apply their sound knowledge to
figure out new words. We have also started “Guided Reading” and “Writing”
programs in the classroom. The students are really excited about learning to
read and to write. In addition, reviewing the letter names, sounds and
formations is a focus in preparation for report cards.
In the math area, the
students will be continuing with the unit: Exploring Numbers 6-10. They will be practicing rote
counting to 70, counting backwards from 12 and number printing 1-10. The days
of the week and month names will also be reinforced and practiced via chants
and songs.
We will begin with an
author study of “Eric Hill”. Eric Hill writes the many “Spot” titles. Spot is a
loveable, playful pup who goes on adventures. The large bold print, the
surprise flap, the identifiable characters and the simple illustrations all
contribute to the children’s attraction to the books. As a class we will be
practising making predictions, sequencing events, noticing detail and discussing
vocabulary.
Points to Note:
1.
Kindergarten report cards will be sent
home on Monday, March 24th, 2014.
2. Parent-Teacher
Interviews will be held the evenings of March 26th and March 27th,
2014. When you receive the choice slip please complete and send back as soon as
possible.
Take
care and let’s all hope for lamb weather!! If you have any questions or
concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me!
Sincerely,
